"Often, as Christians, we look to our churches and our colleagues to build our theology rather than base our doctrinal stand on what God's Word says. This is why many have come to believe that God does not speak to His children today -- not because of anything the Bible has said, but because of disinformation they have received somewhere along the line. God has given us His Word and His promises, and He expects us to check our decisions and our beliefs with Scripture so that we will not get tripped up with disinformation. We are always correct to ask God to renew our minds so that we conform to Him rather than to the beliefs of the world."
This resonated so loudly in my heart and mind as I read it. I am dealing with a similar situation in life. A loved one is being fed misinformation. I have spoken to them about it ... I have cried about it ... I have prayed about it, and ultimately I have given it over to God. God has shared with me that I cannot change someone. Only He can. Isn't this the truth? How many times in life have we thought, "Well, I will date this person even if we are different because in time I will change them! ... I will take this job and change things once I get a good foot in the door." We all think we can make someone who we desire them to be but we do not have that capability. It has caused many people, including myself, a lot of heartache and pain.
When I first gave my heart to the Lord many years ago, God placed it on my heart then to always rely on His Word for direction and not on my pastor's. Over the course of time, I have received great word and revelation from Pastors which I knew from my study of His Word were in line with Scripture. When, however, I heard something amiss ... something that did not register or did not quite sound right, I would seek it out in the Bible. I would pray over it and seek the Holy Spirit's guidance and ask for understanding. It has been and always will be a continued policy for me, and it should be for you.
Doubting something some one says is not saying they are wrong intentionally. What if your spiritual mentor, whether a Pastor or whoever, was instructed incorrectly? What if they were taught wrong and they are just sharing what someone shared with them? Their heart is in the right place. They did not mean to intentionally mislead you. BUT, you were misled regardless because you did not take the time to find out for yourself through the reading of God's Word and prayer whether it was true or not. Many are misinformed today because of wrong teachings.
The Bible speaks very clearly of false prophecy. When someone tries to tell you it is a sin for women to wear pants ... it is a sin for women to wear jewelry ... it is a sin for women to have a leadership role in the home or in the church, then you have to know this is not true. You need to get into the Word and find it out for yourself. You have to understand and allow God to minister to you. You have to take into consideration how history plays a huge part in all of this. You have to study and then study some more. Some things changed when Christ died on the cross for us. This does not mean God changed because He did not. God is the same today as yesterday and will be the same tomorrow. No, the law did not change and that is for another discussion at another time!
Just to provide an example of what I mean by history playing a part ... knowing what certain words meant at the time the Bible was written ... here is an article about women wearing pants which you should read. Go to https://biblicalgenderroles.com/2016/03/04/is-it-wrong-for-christian-women-to-wear-pants and it will help you understand. You need true discernment to understand or you can be easily led astray.
Another example I will share with you is this ... In Exodus 21:23-24, "But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot ..." In the New Testament it reads in Matthew 5:38-39, "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'. But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also."
God is love first and foremost. Jesus died on the cross to free us from man-made laws. It does not mean we have a free reign to sin, but it does mean Jesus is more concerned about your love walk than how you dress or what you eat. Yes we are commanded, as women, to dress modestly but I do not think God is going to judge me for wearing pants, wearing jewelry, or having a leadership role so I can win hearts to Christ.
Disinformation is just as powerful in a person's mind as the right Word. Disinformation can destroy lives. It can cause a brother to stumble. Walk in love ... strive to be what God has put on your heart to be. God knows the desire of your heart. If it is pure ... if you are seeking His discernment daily ... if you love the Lord God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul, then you cannot go wrong. Focus on how to reach others for Christ through love, and then allow God to do the rest. If you are doing all of this, you will mature in your walk daily. People will see the fruit of your walk. God will give you true discernment.
Do not debate God's Word. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 2:14, "Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers." Ask yourself this question ... Is it more important for me to walk in love winning hearts for Christ or is it more important for me to follow legalistic rules set out by man which turn people from the church? I am not saying we should sin to win hearts or to justify what is wrong. I am saying if we walk in love and seek God every second of every day, then the Holy Spirit will do the rest. The Holy Spirit will guide you to do what is righteous in God's eyes. Do not allow man to persecute you or condemn you to the point you turn from God! Man-made laws can destroy people ... it can tear down churches ... it can destroy families. Simply love and let God!
Sometimes in life we simply have to agree to disagree. No one will ever fully understand Scripture. There will always be disagreements. Just do not allow those disagreements to hinder what God is trying to do through you. Do not allow those disagreements to become so big in your mind that you falter and lose your way. Focus on winning hearts, seeking God, and everything else will fall into place.
I love you all and wish you a very blessed day!
